I am honored to be given the opportunity to inform everyone that the Entomological Society of Malaysia (ENTOMA) is a professional society which promotes the importance of entomological knowledge for the benefit of mankind and the environment. The ENTOMA plays an active role in making the people at large, regardless of age and background, to a better understanding of the importance of insects in our life. We are not just aiming for the researchers and scientists to be part of the 'family', we would like to spread our wings by inviting hobbyist, economists, policy makers and others with non-scientific background. Without doubt, insects play a wide role in important functions in our ecosystem. They act as vectors of diseases, pests of crops, pollinators, bioindicators in stream health and forensic investigation. More recently they have also been successfully utilised in medical treatment.
Agriculture is one of the National Key Economic Area under the Economic Transformation Program with its goal of transforming Malaysia into becoming a developed nation by the year 2020. Insects pests have long been the major problem in crop production since many of them are defoliators and vectors of various kind of diseases. The sharing of knowledge of pests among members from various backgrounds, will definitely help in decision making and formulating action plans. As such, as the president of ENTOMA, I urge all of you to join this society so that we can work together, to educate and inform the public, that insect is very important in our life.
